Arlington County and the City of Alexandria were once one entity. In 1870, the city was separated from what was then Alexandria County. To avoid confusion, the county was renamed Arlington County in 1920. It was named after Arlington House, the former home of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Parks and Recreation

Alexandria's Cameron Run Regional Park includes a wave pool, water slides, mini golf, and a hiking trail. The Mount Vernon Trail is routed through Old Town Alexandria. It is quite popular with bikers and hikers alike.

Chinquapin Recreation Center in Alexandria offers facilities for swimmers, tennis players and racquetball enthusiasts. Over 950 acres is devoted to parks in Alexandria.

Attractions and Activities

Arlington National Cemetery rests on land once confiscated from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee by the federal government. The eternal flame at President John F. Kennedy's gravesite is here. The Marine Corps Memorial is also in Arlington.

In Alexandria, there's the Pope-Leighey House, designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Mount Vernon is Gen. George Washington's one-time home and plantation.


The Arlington Festival of the Arts is a relatively new event that is held every September in the Clarendon District of Arlington. It is held the week after the annual Alexandria Festival of the Arts. Artists and craftsmen display mixed media, jewelry, pottery, glass, paintings and more.

The Columbia Pike Blues Festival comes to Arlington every June. This event draws music lovers from the local community and from throughout the greater Washington area.
